Watch Alert: Kurono Tokyo Calendrier Type I

Hajime Asaoka is one of the finest watchmakers on the planet, no doubt. His watches reach stratospheric prices and he produces all parts of the watch in his workshop in Tokyo. To make his designs and watches more approachable for mere mortals, he founded Kurono Tokyo. A watch studio run by him that sells watches with off-the-shelf movements but designs of dials and cases that are 100% Hajime Asaoka. Kurono used to be the insider tip and has now became a brand that sells out of their new releases in minutes as recently seen with the 34mm watches.

Today we are looking at the latest release for GPHG – a Kurono Tokyo full calendar.

Design and Watch Specifications

Dimensions: 38mm diameter, 11.5mm thickness, mm lug-to-lug, sapphire crystal, 50- hours power reserve, 26 Jewels, 28,800 vph,  lug width: 20mm, Miyota 9122 movement, steel case, khaki green dial, SuperLuminova, Water Resistance 50m

It’s slightly different but still immediately identifiable as a Kurono/Hajime Asaoka design. The story goes that a friend asked Mr. Asaoka: “If you had to live on an isolated island, what would you take with you?” He wanted to take a special watch, so he designed this one. The sapphire crystal is domed, the khaki green dial features a day of the week subdial on 9 o’clock and the month on 3 o’clock, and the date is shown via a window at 6 o’clock. There is a printed minute track on the outside and the hour indices are printed in an interesting font reminiscent of the Grand Seiko logo. The 38mm case has a coin edge bezel, smooth silky swooping lines, and is polished throughout. The hands use the iconic design we have seen before  – the dial has a very nice three-dimensionality on it – so they say – but according to photos it does indeed look like they succeeded in that. It’s a gorgeous watch. The subdials have some radial Guilloche work done and it just looks harmonic and beautiful.

Concluding Thoughts

Value for money is excellent with this watch. A Kurono Tokyo gives you incredible respect with watch aficionados for a low entry price. If you can get one. It’s a limited run and we know it will sell out very quickly. I must admit – the more I look at this watch, the more I like it. Once again, I might pull the trigger myself – or at least try to get my order in. And that’s while I still wait for the delivery of my 34mm Kurono which will be a present for my wife.
