Welcome to the Scottish Watches Podcast – Episode 362! We have not only a new guest today but also a brand that hasn’t gotten its dedicated podcast till now. Michael joined the watch industry 17 years ago, falling particularly in love with the story telling side and building connections with his customers. Through the years he’s worked for himself, various boutiques, Bremont, Wolf, and Zodiac now as Brand Director.
He talks about how the brands long history, since 1882, affects modern pieces, how the acquisition by Fossil has benefited them in terms of design and technological development for their movements. Plus, he hints at new colorways, materials, and complication coming shortly!

Ariste Calame set up a workshop to produce specialized watches in 1882 continuing the legacy of his watchmaking family. This involved patenting both mechanisms and calibers. Over time this evolved into the first Zodiacs when he patented the name in 1908. Two examples of their mechanical prowess was the Zodiac extra flat pocket watch with a Zodiac caliber 1617 movement in 1924 and in 1930 their unique shock-proofing system that utilizes a z-shaped spring clip over the balance. 1937 – Launches the 10.5 Ligne, 8-day wristwatch movement.1949 – Autographic had a gauge measuring hours of power, one of the only two watches at the time to have a power reserve collection. In the 1950s Zodiac launches their most popular model, the Zodiac Sea Wolf. 1950’s Zodiac Triple Date Moonphase Automatic. Michaels favorite complication from the brand. In 1969 Zodiac launched the Astrographic featuring floating minute and hour hands and a small red moon that orbits the dial while counting the seconds. The Olympus, launched in 1970, had the same floating hands as the Astrographic, but in a manta ray inspired case. Zodiac released the Dynotron as the first Swiss electronic watch in 1968. The Fossil Group bought the brand in 2001 and introduce design updates and colors.
